Drop

Lyrics: Chiba Yuusuke
Trans.: Alex Fyffe and Yumi Hori

Wandering around
day turns to night
Wandering around
I go into the night

The hand of god
is sticky pink

Slowly over the horizon
day turns to night
Slowly over the horizon
I go into the night

the feeling of candy
licked clean

Notes:

Translated in 2008. Edited in 2011.

Special thanks to Yumi Hori, who told me that the song is not about dropping but about hard candy. ドロップ (Drop) is a famous type of hard candy in Japan (see Grave of the Fireflies), so, although the last line sounds like “The feeling of drop(ping)” (which is probably intended), the word なめつきした (licked off completely) implies that the song is referring to the candy. It seems that the singer is the candy, and the hand of god is sticky with pink from the candy, and in the end he licks it from his fingers (or so I believe). The double meaning of drop, being both a candy and an action, is used to great effect in the film 青い春 (Blue Spring, based on the manga by one of my favorite artists, Matsumoto Taiyo). This movie introduced me to Thee Michelle Gun Elephant (four or five of their songs are used throughout the film), and it almost feels like director Toyoda Toshiaki’s love letter to their music. Also, see his follow-up film, 9 Souls, to hear an excellent soundtrack from the band dip.

  1. All along I thought the song was about drop/falling. My life has been a lie. But no really, thanks for the translation!! I really love your interpretation on it! I was also introduced to TMGE by the film Blue Spring and this song is probably one of my favorites. Any chance of translating more TMGE songs in the future?🙂

Also, 9 Souls was a great film too. And the music done by dip is wonderful~
