Eight Free-form Haiku by Nakahara Shidô (中原紫童)

Falling cherry blossoms
The doll is always
inside glass

The loneliness in a horse’s eyelash
is snow falling in the spring

When the horse’s penis
goes tokkun-tokkun
Spring nights are returning

Rain stops falling
in the mountains
when a snake
tries to hide its tail

All is still in the hen house
A red moon rises
on one whose life is departing
–(On the death of my mother)

A single firefly
clings to the door
of my home in mourning

The winter sunset
smells of Catholics
crows on the cross

Naked,
stars
fall

(Nakahara Shidô)

NOTES:

I couldn’t find a definition for とっくんとっくん (tokkun-tokkun), so I’ll let you imagine exactly what a horse’s penis does on nights in spring.
