Boats by Amano Tadashi (小舟 / 天野忠)

Young people are rich,
so it’s all right for them to rush ahead
without watching where they’re going.
But old people are poor,
so they have to be stingy.
From life
to death,
we all row our boats
gently ahead.
We look carefully
at our surroundings,
and ever so slowly
we row forward,
each in our own little boat.

若い人は物持ちだから
あたりの景色も見ずに
どんどん先に行くのもよい。
老人は貧しいから
物惜しみをしなくてはならない。
生から
死に向かって
極めてゆるやかに
自分の舟を漕ぎなさい。
あたりの景色を
じっくりと見つめながら
ゆっくり ゆっくり
漕いでおゆき、
めいめいの小さな舟を。
