Night is Coming On by Ishihara Yoshiro

Isn’t it lonely the way evening moves
on legs like an ostrich?
Isn’t it awful
the way night comes meandering in?
Can you stand it,
not checking the time?
Can you stand the way night descends
as though coming down the stairs?
Isn’t it terrifying being left
alone to rest, like
being pulled out with the tide?
Isn’t it depressing
when you become like the promises you believed in
when you believed in promises?

* * *

UPDATE: Originally, I misread 駝鳥 (ostrich) as 駱駝 (camel). Corrected.
