Haiku by Masaoka Shiki (正岡子規)

their colors remain
on the palette

rain falls
on the withered vine

a spoonful
of ice cream —
I am revived!

  1. Fantastic, as usual. I am especially struck by the second. I hope you are still devoting some time to translating haiku and will return to posting more of your work on this website. I very much appreciate it and imagine many others do as well. There is a real need for translations of these excellent poets who remain largely unknown in the English-speaking world. Have you published any of your translations in book-form yet, or have you considered assembling a collection for publication? If this is something you are interested in pursuing, please contact me via my website, as I would like to discuss it with you more.

    • Thank you for your kind words and for following the site for so long. Unfortunately, I haven’t found as much time to translate since I started teaching, which is why my entries have been sporadic the past couple of years.
