Blue Fish by Kanenobu Sachiko

Blue Fish
Kanenobu Sachiko

The blue sea and the blue fish
I held them all, long ago, in my hands
But now all I’m holding onto
Is a cold wind
Slipping through my fingers

A group of grotesque children
Tire tracks on the sidewalk
Only the dim-faced moon
Follows after
Yesterday’s tracks

Even when the blinders
had been removed from the chickens
They never, never
Never again
Looked up at the sky

NOTES: Original Japanese lyrics taken from this video.

Kanenobu Sachiko became one of Japan’s first woman singer-songwriters (perhaps the first) in the late-60s folk scene. Today, her 1973 album, み空 (Misora), is a recognized classic.
