“Get Through Today” by Nobuyasu Okabayashi

Stop your fretting, that’s enough
Today’s passing yesterday by
Stop listening to yesterday, that’s enough
Today has passed, you have tomorrow

You’ve got to say something
Try to be a good, obedient kid
And you’ll never understand
Get through today
Start living for tomorrow

Stop clinging to the past, that’s enough
Today’s already yesterday
Stop acting so proper, that’s enough
Tomorrow’s already yesterday

You’ve got to say something
Try to be a good, obedient kid
And you’ll never understand
Get through today
Start living for tomorrow

Original lyrics:

The Long Journey to Freedom by Nobuyasu Okabayashi

Suddenly it’s like I’m not myself anymore
Like a leaf fluttering in the wind, like a boat set adrift
To get back to myself again
I’m bidding farewell to the world I know and taking a trip
I want to believe, so I’ll keep going uncertainly
Alone on the long journey to freedom
Another day on the long journey to freedom

I don’t know where this road leads
I only know that I’ll finally get somewhere
What kind of place will it be?
What will I find there?
Without knowing, all alone, I’m bidding farewell and taking a trip
I want to believe, so I’ll keep going uncertainly
Alone on the long journey to freedom
Another day on the long journey to freedom

Original lyrics:

Nobuyasu Okabayashi is a Japanese folk singer whose career dates back to the late 1960s. His style and social and political messaging quickly drew comparisons to Bob Dylan, an artist he covered early on in his career. This song is taken from his 1970 album (Leap Before You Look), which featured the newly-formed Happy End, who became one of Japan’s most famous folk-rock groups, as his backing band. The entire album can be heard on YouTube (highly recommended).

When I Die, Then That’s Goodbye by Usagi

When I Die, Then That’s Goodbye
Lyrics: Mariko Goto

When I die, stop the clock
and wind it back to when we were together
Sometimes we fought, sometimes we laughed
I still think about those days we spent together

When I die, turn off the light
so I won’t see you crying,
“It’s cruel being left behind”
so I won’t see you crying alone

The evening sun flickers red on the face of the water
A lonely cat’s corpse–“Found it,” I laughed–and
the light came shining down

When I die, will someone please
swap out that one string on my red guitar?
It’s a good guitar with a few quirks
Could someone swap out that string for me?

The light came shining down

When I die, forget about me
It’s okay if you hold hands with someone I don’t know
but just remember me a little bit
Just remember the day I died

When I die and many years have passed,
I know you’ll forget about me
but just remember me a little bit
Just remember the day I died

The evening sun flickers red on the face of the water
A lonely cat’s corpse reminds me of someone
The light came shining down

When I die . . .

NOTES: Mariko Goto, famous for her work with the Japanese punk rock band Midori, started out as vocalist and guitarist of Usagi (Rabbit). Thanks to Andrew White for pointing me in the direction of Usagi’s album. Great find. Original Japanese lyrics below.

There’s No One on the Train by Tama

Now I’m limping along
The outskirts of town
On a black railroad, printed with a misalignment
The lights in the children’s hospital are dim

Before the portrait appears in the middle of the night

Somewhere the rails are rusted
I miss the dry clouds of dust
In the orange color of eternity
Countless crows come to me

Before the portrait laughs in the middle of the night

Passing by a small candy store
A glass wind pierces my cheeks
From someone’s house, the sound of a girl’s piano
Looking up at the stars is terrifying

The portrait stares at me in the middle of the night

The Dreaming Girl, Flying High, In the Sky by tricot

When we were little they told us
to fill our hearts with dreams
But as we got older the adults
kept shouting at us to get real

Will anyone go out of their way
to follow you on the same path?
I just don’t know at all

Flying high
the dreaming girl, in the sky

Your arms and legs
aren’t just there to hang limp from your body
I don’t care how ugly you are
Walk with your own purpose
Someone who doesn’t choose his own path
can no longer dream
Those who live believing
in a predetermined path
always end up
at hollow destinations

Flying high
the dreaming girl, in the sky

When we were little they told us
to fill our hearts with dreams
But as we got older the adults
kept shouting at us to get real
Don’t make yourself dance with someone
who only believes in common sense
Dance however you like

Lose My Mind by INU (気い狂て / INU)

There are so many people
And I’m just one of them
We’re all about to suffocate
In each other’s shifty eyes

Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die
Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die
Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die
Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die

Some things are easily had
Some are hardly obtainable
And even if you do get them
There’s no way they belong to you

Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die
Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die
Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die
Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die

Somehow it all became so clear, what it is that I’m feeling
The old guy at the steamed bun shop, too
Typical everyday depression

Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die
Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die
Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die
Get off my back, or I’ll lose my mind and die

Canary by Saijo Yaso

The canary that forgot his song
Shall I abandon him in the mountains?
Oh no, oh no, you mustn’t do that

The canary that forgot his song
Shall I bury him in the small bush out back?
Oh no, oh no, you mustn’t do that

The canary that forgot his song
Shall I whip him with a branch from the willow tree?
Oh no, oh no, that’s just too cruel

The canary that forgot his song, if we float him out to sea on a moonlit night
In an ivory boat with golden oars, then he will remember the song he forgot

White Flowers of the Blind Man by Iuchi Kengo

This deep color comes from inside of us
Wet with your blood and mine
The white flowers of the blind man who blew himself up

Spattered on the ground, the rotting flesh
Stains the thin night, and they speak to me
The white flowers of the blind man who blew himself up

* * *

I Hope You Suffer Till the Day You Die by Iuchi Kengo

I abandoned my child on the mountain
and the birds came and DE—–VOURED—–HIM—————-!!!
The old man blew himself up and his petals shone black with oil
Led astray by sad memories
I hope you suffer till the day you die
I hope you suffer till the day you die

Rule the sky like black crows
Stain the evening crimson red
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
I hope you suffer till the day you die
I hope you suffer till the day you die
I hope you suffer till the day you die
Till the day you die

UPDATE: Thanks to Grady Martin for tracking down the origin of these lyrics. They happened to be a song from the same album as “White Flowers of the Blind Man,” Iuchi Kengo’s The Spring of Your Madness in Bloom

The following is a translation of some lyrics that appear in various places online, but no writer or singer is attributed to them. I have tried searching for more information, but all I can gather is that it seems to be a controversial folk song, perhaps in the “death folk” or “funeral folk” style. If anyone knows anything more, please leave a comment below.

Spring Dream by Sai Yoshiko

Late this spring night, a red flower
Drops one petal on my breast, two on my hat.
I’m feeling pretty and whistling
All the way to the city where you live.

In the brief hours of the secret night,
Drunk on sweet sake,
Listening to fairy tales, we close our eyes
Like the kitten on the stove.

Farewell at three in the morning,
The gift that I hand to you.
Our parting words are endless,
A clock with a broken pendulum.
