loneliness
with a slight fever
spotted bellflower

微熱持つ寂しさ蛍袋かな

summer sky —
the construction paper’s edges
curl up

夏空や画用紙の端反り返る

the scolding
slowly sinks in
ice water

じんわりと染み込む叱言氷水

passing
through each gate
summer’s end

それぞれの門をくぐりて夏の果

I think it’ll ring
the phone that hasn’t rung
thirteen nights

鳴ると思う電話の鳴りぬ十三夜

cutting off
a lock of hair
shooting star

切り落とす髪の一束流れ星

receiving
the mandate of heaven
diamond dust

天命を拝受ダイヤモンドダスト

migratory birds–
wristwatches
like handcuffs

鳥引くや手錠のように腕時計

through the window screen
and through the wilderness
to reincarnate

網戸抜け荒地を抜けて転生す

buying a diary
I put tomorrow’s bread
in the same bag

日記買う同じ袋に明日のパン

spin the globe west and graduate

地球儀を西へ廻して卒業す

I peek at the flower pot
where tulips should be coming out

チューリップ出てくるはずの鉢覗く

if I’m not careful
you’ll get a confession
evening cherry blossoms

気を抜くと告白になる夕櫻

that man
is presumed innocent
spring lightning

その男推定無罪春の雷

Yuriko Seto was born in Tokyo in 1972 and currently resides in Hokkaido. Discovered haiku in 1997 at a haiku gathering called Hashi (“Bridge”). Has participated in groups such as WA and itak. Won an honorable mention in the 29th Annual Gendai Haiku Association New Face Award in 2011. Won the Central Hokkaido Haiku Award in 2014. A member of the Gendai Haiku Association and the Hokkaido Haiku Association, she is also the president of the Sapporo Haiku Club. Her haiku collection Confession (告白) was released in 2017.
