Haiku By Popona Tsukino (月野ぽぽな)

wisteria flowers
have bloomed deep
in my calves

ふくらはぎの深さに藤の花咲けり

pizzicato firefly

ピッチカート蛍ピッチカート蛍

summer fish
more silent
than silver

夏の魚銀色よりも静かなり

the sound of collapse within it
canna lily

その中に崩落の音花カンナ

yellow leaves fall
when the light
is too heavy

黄落す光が重たすぎるとき

mothers smile
in shades of morning glory

母たちは朝顔色にほほえみぬ

a form
that defies itself
lightning

自らに逆らうかたち稲光

spring birds
strumming
the horizon!

春の鳥水平線をつまびくよ

in the wolf’s eyes
a medieval wind

狼の目に中世の風ありぬ

the Aegean
Sea-colored wings
of the electric fan

エーゲ海色の翼の扇風機

the lake
freezes over
wing-dark

みずうみは凍てて翼の昏さかな

viewing cherry blossoms
still in human form

まだ人のかたちで桜見ています

I hold my breath
and stick the blade in the flesh
of Christmas Eve

息止めて聖夜の肉に刃を入れる

white balloon flowers
girls showing each other
their scars

白ききょう傷を見せ合う少女たち

asleep on a trip
I sound like a sheet of rain

旅に寝て我は一枚の雨音

it ends with you
it begins with cherry blossoms

どこまでがあなたどこからが桜

Milky Way
still dripping wet
over the town

銀漢はびしょ濡れのまま街の上

after the typhoon
the weeds and I
are all mixed up

野分あと草とわたくしと混ざる

fingertips
for music
spring stars

Popona Tsukino (b. 1965 in Nagano, Japan) is the pen name of Michiyo Kigawa. She moved to New York, USA, in 1992. She started writing haiku in 2002 after encountering renku, tanka, and haiku online. In 2004, she joined Kaitei and started studying under Tohta Kaneko. She went on to win the 43rd Kaitei Newcomer’s Prize in 2008. That same year, she participated in the NY Haiku Association and Hakobune (New York).

She is a member of many haiku associations, including Mame-no-Ki, and she has won many other awards, including the Mame-no-Ki Prize in 2009 and 2019, the 28th Gendai Haiku Association New Face Award in 2010, the 63rd Kadokawa Haiku Prize in 2017, and the Blue Earth Award in 2018. She is not only a member of the Gendai Haiku Association, but is also a representative of the Hoshi-no-Shima Haiku Association (formerly known as the New York Haiku Association).

Tsukino is married to the pianist Taka Kigawa.
